European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
