Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
