The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

Whenever a significant awards ceremony nears, you'll find an outcry to include additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier game development, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
