Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple conversations following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, after the opener made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment after his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, he said his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special entering this game."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – after England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk externally. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley concluded.
